Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically. They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what they read.

For this workshop, students will combine fluency practice with Alliteration, animals connections, and art while developing vocabulary skills. Alliteration allows students to strengthen their phonemic awareness while practicing their developing writing skills. Through the use of mentor texts by Graeme Base , students construct a definition of alliteration. Using these texts as models, students experiment with creating alliterative sentences. creating their own alliterative books.
